BDS Course Eligibility

Admission to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) in India is regulated by the Dental Council of India (DCI) and the National Testing Agency (NTA). Like MBBS, admission to all BDS seats is granted solely through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG). Candidates must satisfy the eligibility criteria prescribed by the DCI before applying.

Essential Eligibility Criteria

To secure a BDS seat, a candidate must meet three core conditions - age, academic qualification, and nationality.

1. Age Requirement

  • Minimum age: 17 years as on 31st December of the year of admission.
  • Upper age limit: No upper age limit for NEET-UG (the earlier 25 year cap was removed by a Supreme Court order).

2. Academic Qualification

  • Candidates must have passed Class 12 (10+2) or an equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English as core subjects.

3. Nationality

  • Indian Nationals, NRIs, OCIs, PIOs, and Foreign Nationals are eligible to appear for NEET-UG.

Minimum Qualifying Marks in Class 12

As per DCI regulations candidates must obtain the following minimum aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Biotechnology (taken together):

Category Required Minimum Aggregate (PCB)
General / EWS 50%
General-PwBD (Physically Disabled) 45%
SC / ST / OBC (NCL) 40%
SC / ST / OBC-PwBD 40%

Note: English must be a qualifying subject at the 10+2 level for all categories.
